Sony announces next-gen PlayStation VR

Last Updated 26 February 2021, 09:01 IST

While Sony is struggling to meet the demand for the PlayStation 5 console, the Japanese consumer electronics major has announced to bring the new generation Virtual Reality (VR) headgear.

The company did not reveal any specification nor the design, but said that the new PSVR set promises to offer enhanced playing experience on popular gaming titles such as Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, Tetris Effect, Blood & Truth, Moss, Beat Saber, and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard when played on PS4 Pro and PlayStation 5.

"We’re continuing to innovate with our new VR system so that our fans can continue to enjoy the unique experiences that are synonymous with PlayStation. We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input. It will connect to PS5 with a single cord to simplify setup and improve ease-of-use while enabling a high-fidelity visual experience," said Hideaki Nishino, senior vice president, platform planning & management.

Nishino revealed that the upcoming VR controller will come equipped with some key features inspired by the DualSense wireless controller and offer great ergonomics in terms of how it will be comfortably fit on the head and easily accessible control buttons.

Sony's new PlayStation VR is still under development and the company promises that it will be future-proof and be compatible with new consoles for several years.

It should be noted that the last PSVR device was launched four years ago and is compatible with the current PlayStation 5 series console.

In a related development, Sony says the PlayStation 5 will be in short supply till the second half of 2021. Apparently, the Covid-19-induced lockdown in 2020 continues to plague the company and the supply chain contractors to get components and assemble them.
