Watch out Apple, Facebook to bring Google Wear OS-based smart wearable in 2022

Last Updated 13 February 2021, 11:02 IST

Facebook's Oculus churns out some of the best Augmented Reality (AR)/ Virtual Reality (VR) headgears in the market. Even Portal video chat devices are doing decent business in select markets. American technology major is reportedly working on a smartwatch.

Facebook's upcoming first-generation smart wearable will run an open-source version of Google's Wear OS, but the company has plans to develop its own operating system for future iterations, The Information reported citing company insiders.

The Facebook watch will come with vital biometric sensors such as a heart rate monitor, it will be able to read messages, notifications, and track sports similar to other fitness trackers in the market.

Also, it is said to be tightly integrated with Facebook's Messenger app and also compatible with third-party fitness applications such as Peloton. If things go as planned, it is said to hit stores in 2022.

Right now, Apple Watch dominates the smart wearable industry with Fitbit (owned by Google), Samsung, and others playing the catch-up game. Now, Facebook is gearing to enter into the fray.

However, given the dubious user privacy policy of Facebook, it remains to be seen if the smart wearable will find any traction among consumers to trust their health details with Mark Zuckerberg's company.
