The Cottonpet police have registered an FIR against three BBMP officials for causing "intense cruelty" to animals.

Dr G Anand, joint director, animal husbandary, BBMP; Basavaraj, additional director; and Abhilash Maddur, in-charge, Animal Birth Control (ABC) centre, west zone, were booked following a complaint by Geetha Mishra, an animal rights activist.

Mishra claimed the BBMP's ABC centre was a "hell" for animals. "Animals are abruptly shifted from one place to another. Some of them have been moved to a forest near Kanakapura. This is against the norms of the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI). Even the sterilisation is not conducted by trained doctors," he stated in the complaint.

DCP (West) Ravi D Channannavar said a preliminary inquiry was under way. "We will issue a notice to the complainant to furnish the evidence. We will act as per the law," he told DH.
