A seven-year-old Class 2 student of a private school was sexually assaulted by a 19-year-old diploma dropout in her school toilet on October 29 in Bommenahalli on the outskirts of East Bengaluru.

The Avalahalli police arrested the suspect identified as Suman, and have also booked the principal and the chairman of the educational institution which runs both the school and a college. The management tried to hush it up by trying to get the suspect and the victim’s family to compromise but the victim’s mother filed a complaint the following day.

The school has classes from standard 1 to 7 and is situated behind the diploma college belonging to the same educational institution. There are around 150 pupils studying at the school and the victim who lives close by, had come to the school at 8 am. Her school closes at 3.30 pm after which she stays back for an hour for tuition classes in the school. Her mother picks her up after tuitions, the police said.

At the tuition class, she asked the teacher for permission to go to the toilet. When she entered the toilet, Suman, who was already in the toilet, locked the toilet from inside and sexually assaulted the girl.

When the girl started screaming, the teachers and other staffers rushed to the toilet to find the door locked. When they knocked on it, Suman opened the door and tried to run away.

A few staffers chased and caught him and took him to the principal’s room.

The victim’s father, who works as a supervisor at a garment factory and the mother who is a housewife, approached the Avalahalli police the following day and lodged a complaint, the police said.

The police immediately arrested Suman and booked the management for not intimating the police.

Suman, a resident of Kurubarahalli in Hoskote, was arrested and produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.

The police learnt that Suman dropped out of his 2nd-year diploma after failing two to three times.

They are investigating why he had come to the college that day and how he ended up inside the girl’s toilet.

“We have booked Suman under sections 7 and 8 of POCSO Act. The principal and chairman have been booked under Section 21 of the POCSO Act,” said Kumar, Dy SP Hoskote division, Bengaluru district police.
