Avoid social gatherings, BBMP urges senior citizens

BBMP officials have urged senior citizens to be cautious while attending social gatherings.

The request comes after it emerged that more than 93% of Covid-positive residents of an apartment complex in Bilekahalli, South Bengaluru, are above 60 years.

Meeting the resident welfare association (RWA) communities in the wake of the formation of new clusters, BBMP Commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad said the apartment complex had a population of 1,052 people and as many as 103 tested positive for Covid-19.

“About 96 of them are aged over 60. Hence, we appeal to senior citizens to limit attending social gatherings besides adhering to rules issued by the government,” the BBMP commissioner said.

Prasad said that any social gathering in apartments or party halls in the apartment complex could become a super-spreader episode without proper ventilation and because of air-conditioning facilities.

“In such a scenario, the presence of even one patient would result in multiple infections. Hence, a large gathering of people should be discouraged and participation limited in social gatherings,” he said.

Prasad directed RWAs to maintain a physical distance of 3.25 metres and ensure the mandatory wearing of masks in common areas.
He also asked them to frequently sanitise common facilities such as the reception, gymnasiums and sporting facilities.

“While operating swimming pools, the RWAs must strictly enforce and adhere to all the guidelines issued by the state government,” he added.
