A 24-year-old woman so desperately needed money that she schemed with four men to rob a friend in her paying guest digs in southern Bengaluru on Monday, police said.

Ashwini B G, a resident of KSRTC Layout, Uttarahalli, presumed her friend, Ranjitha, who works for a private company, had lots of cash. Jobless and desperately needing money, Ashwini decided to rob Ranjitha with the help of four men.

As per the game plan, Ashwini went to Ranjitha’s digs but came out shortly thereafter, saying she would go buy snacks. She then quickly alerted the four men waiting near the house and returned to Ranjitha’s room a few minutes later.

The men followed her and barged into Ranjitha’s room. Threatening her at knifepoint, they took away her gold chain and cash before taking to their heels.

A terrified Ranjitha decided to approach the police. Ashwini helpfully accompanied her to the jurisdictional Mico Layout police station. As the police began an investigation, they checked the CCTV footage of the locality and zeroed in on Ashwini.

They checked her call detail record and were convinced she was behind it all. They detained her for questioning and it was just a matter of time before her accomplices were tracked down. The other suspects were identified as N Swamy (23), Pradeep Kumar (26), both from Kamakshipalya, Gangadhar (28), of Kaveripura, and Ashwini B G (24), of KSRTC Layout.
