BBMP may tax ads on BMTC buses

“We have incorporated BMTC buses into our draft advertisement policy with some fixed fares. They are very nominal,” said a senior BBMP officer, requesting anonymity.

There have been discussions in the Palike to charge BMTC for advertisements on the buses, and the next meeting will be on Wednesday. The discussions hold signifance as the City in-charge Minister R Ashoka also holds the Transport portfolio.

Ads on railway land

Hoardings on railway land have been a bone of contention between the Railways and the Palike.

The issue has been on the back burner as many projects involving railway land are either in progress or on the anvil.

But, now, the Palike has decided to address the issue through its draft policy.
The Palike has counted as many as 199 hoardings on the railway land but not all of them come under the tax net.

“Advertising agencies have been benefiting since the matter is pending before the court. But it is not the case with all the hoardings,” said the officer.

The new advertisement policy will also focus on strengthening the legal cell of the Palike often criticised for not pursuing cases in courts filed by the owners of hoardings against the tax demand from the Palike.
