BBMP plans to levy SWM cess based on property tax

Last Updated 27 January 2018, 18:45 IST

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is proposing to charge the solid waste management (SWM) cess based on the property tax instead of the dimension of the property.

This proposal will be placed for approval during the BBMP monthly council meeting on Monday.

Hitherto, the cess was charged based on the dimension of the property. If the proposal receives an approval, property owners will have to pay a cess which will be 15% of the property tax instead of the property's dimension.

BBMP is following the model which is being practised in Rajasthan.

Apart from this, all property owners who produce zero waste will get a discount of 50% on property tax. It has categorised all apartment complexes and commercial establishments which produce more than 10 kg of solid waste as huge generators of waste. This is being done to encourage waste processing at base.

All apartments with more than 50 units, commercial complexes that generate business of more than Rs 12 lakh a month, industries, hotels, restaurants, community halls, educational institutions, malls, caterers, petrol bunks, paying guest houses, clubs and hostels come under this scheme.
