NCBS Research scholar commits suicide

A 25-year-old visiting research scholar of National Center For Biological Sciences (NCBC) registered for a PhD degree at Transdisciplinary University, Bengaluru had committed suicide on Sunday at Kodigehalli.

The deceased has been identified as 25-year-old Prerna Tripathi, a native of Kailashpuri area of Banda district in Uttar Pradesh, who was staying in a rented house in Maruthi Nagar near Kodigehalli.

According to a senior police officer, Prerana may have committed suicide around 11 am on Sunday. She was alone at home. She was living with a man whom she was in love with but he had gone to his native three days ago. It is said that both had a fight and Prerana was upset over the incident.

The incident came to light after her friend Anubhava had visited her on Sunday evening around 6 pm and Prerana did not respond to repeated knocks on the door, she then alerted the police who rushed to the spot and broke open the doors and found Prerna hanging from the ceiling fan by a dupatta.

The police have found a death note in Prerana’s room, which stated that nobody is responsible for her death. However, the police are awaiting the postmortem report to proceed with the investigation. They have registered a case under unnatural death. The preliminary investigations have revealed that she was under depression after her grandmother passed away last year and she was also upset over break up with the man.

NCBS in the official statement stated that, Prerna’s tragic passing has come as a shock to the campus community. We have taken immediate steps to provide grief counselling to those closest to Prerna. The authorities have taken over the investigation of the case. Our campus administration is giving its full cooperation and support to these efforts.
