Police have arrested a man who allegedly killed his wife’s lover in the wee hours of Thursday in Andrahalli.

Bharath Kumar, 31, from Rohitnagar near Nelamangala, married Vinutha, 31, eight years ago after he fell in love with her.

At 9 pm on Wednesday, Bharath entered Vinutha’s house in Andrahalli when she went out to buy chicken and kept the door unlocked. He hid under the cot until 3 am and killed Vinutha’s lover Shiva Kumar alias Shivaraj, 27, from Chikkamagaluru district.

Police said Shivaraj met Vinutha three years ago while looking for a job in the city and stayed in her house for a week. The two saw each other regularly as he expressed his love for her. Though Vinutha rejected him, she gave in when Shivaraj threatened to kill himself if she refused his overtures.

Bharath objected to Vinutha’s affair, and she left him to live in a separate place in Andrahalli, where Shivaraj was a visitor at least twice a week.

DCP (West) Sanjeev M Patil said Bharath bought a knife from an e-tailer a month ago. On Wednesday night, he waited for the man under the cot at Vinutha’s house as she was out to buy chicken.

Vinutha prepared dinner and Shivaraj arrived at about 10.30 pm. The duo had dinner and went to sleep. At 3 am, as Vinutha went to the bathroom, Bharath locked the bathroom door and tried strangling Shivaraj, but later stabbed him to death.

Bharath then opened the bathroom door and had an argument with his wife. He called up a relative and told them about the murder. The relative tipped off the police, who rushed to the spot and arrested Bharath.
