Bike rally to protect BNP zone

Last Updated 30 December 2018, 17:33 IST

Environment activists took out a bike rally to Bannerghatta on Sunday protesting the reduction of Bannerghatta National Park (BNP) ‘eco-sensitive zone’ (ESZ) scope.

The rally started at 6.30 am and reached Bannerghatta at around 7.30 am. Around 50 environmentalists participated in the rally organised in collaboration with Riders of the Bangalore and Bangalore Bullet Clubs.

“More than 30,000 people have expressed their support for the campaign to save environment around the BNP by signing the petitions,” said Vijay Nishant, tree doctor and a noted environmentalist.

“The ban on vehicle movement in this zone has attracted many wild animals into this eco-sensitive zone. As many as 85 elephants and their calves have been found so far. Wild dogs and deer have also come to the zone now. So we won’t allow reducing this delicate sector,” Nishant added.

He also said if the eco-sensitive zone is reduced any further, the environmentalists along with their supporters would stage a large-scale protest.
