Two people have died in separate road accidents in the city. Among the victims was a 24-year-old man who was on his way to celebrate his birthday at a friend's place.

Ranjit Kumar, a private company employee, left his Sunkadakatte home for Kumaraswamy Layout around 9 pm on Thursday. He had planned to celebrate his birthday at a friend's place in Kumaraswamy Layout and rode up on NICE Road with a friend named Vinuth on the pillion. Kumar failed to notice a barricade put up on the road and crashed the motorcycle into it. While Vinuth escaped with minor injuries, Kumar sustained severe injuries and died on the spot, a senior police officer said.

The Kumaraswamy Layout traffic police have registered a case.

In the second accident, a 35-year-old woman bringing her son back from school was mowed down by a school van in northeastern Bengaluru's Nagawara on Friday evening.

Poornima, the wife of Govindaraj, had picked up her 13-year-old son, Arun, from school and was returning home around 4.30 pm when the van belonging to Poorna Smrithi Public School, Shampura Main Road, crashed into the compound of a house before striking her. The boy escaped unhurt. The van driver, identified as Poonam Bahadur, a Nepalese national, had apparently lost control of the vehicle because of heavy rainfall. The van driver had dropped off other schoolchildren, a senior police officer said.

A passerby alerted the jurisdictional KG Halli traffic police who arrested Bahadur who had been driving the school van for the past six years. She was produced before the magistrate who remanded her in judicial custody.
