A 27-year-old Congress youth leader was hacked to death by an unidentified armed gang of five men in Yelahanka on Sunday midnight.
The victim, Arun Kumar, was a resident of Allalasandra Gate and was the Yelahanka Old Town Youth Congress president, the police said.
According to the police, at 12 am on Sunday, the gang in a hatchback car intercepted Kumar and his friend Abhishek near Allalasandra Gate while they walking towards their houses after watching a movie with their friend.
Five men armed with sharp-edged weapons, including machetes, got down from the car and surrounded Kumar and started assaulting him. The assailants hit on Kumar’s head continuously in an attempt to kill him instantly, the police said, quoting eyewitness Abhishek, whom the assailants spared.
After the gang fled the spot in their car, Abhishek raised an alarm and with the help of a few neighbours rushed Kumar to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
After being alerted about the incident, the Yelahanka police rushed to the spot and conducted a detailed probe.
Based on the information provided by Abhishek, the police have launched a massive search for the assailants. There were no CCTV cameras in and around the spot of crime.
However, the police, based on Abhishek’s inputs on the description of the assailants and the make of the car, are verifying CCTV footage from the surrounding area to identify the vehicle.
Preliminary inquiries and probe so far do not point to any political angle, a senior police officer privy to the investigation told DH.
“We suspect rivalry or some work-related grudges between his friends or people whom he knew,” said Kala Krishnaswamy, DCP Northeast division.
Kumar was into local youth politics and did odd jobs for his living. The police are probing in all the angles to ascertain if anyone nurtured grudge with Kumar taking into account the nature of the gruesome murder.
