City hospitals to observe World Heart Day today

Hospitals across the city have planned events to mark the World Heart Day on Saturday.

The SSNMC Super Specialty Hospital is organising a BR Life 5K run with 'High 5' as its theme.

During the event, the doctors will educate the public about heart ailments and symptoms. A free heart screening clinic will be set up in the hospital till October 01.

The Fortis Hospital will conduct a series of events to educate people on the importance of a healthy heart.

As part of its three-day event, it conducted cardiac screening on 500 policemen at its Cunningham Road hospital. It also organised healthy activities and games at various apartments.

It has organised a spin wheel game for the public, which will make them do certain exercises to keep their hearts healthy.

Manipal Hospitals will launch “Guardians of Heart”, a campaign to create 25,000 heart smart teachers.

Dr Sanjay Mehrotra, senior consultant cardiology, Narayana Health City said: “Heart diseases are one of the major cause of mortality in our country and, it is increasingly affecting the younger generation. In the past 10 years, the number has increased by over 50% per cent among people under 40 age group."

"Coronary heart disease, hypertension-related heart diseases, rheumatic heart disease and cardiomyopathy are the four major types of heart problems commonly seen in our country," he said.
