Conman tricks gold loan firm executive

A conman duped a gold loan firm executive of Rs 1.10 lakh on the pretext of shifting his gold pawned at a different gold loan firm to the executive’s firm on April 14, 2018.

Abhilash T R, a manager with Hindustan Gold lodged a complaint with the Thilaknagar police on Monday alleging he was conned by a man who identified himself as Mahohar.

In his complaint to the police, Manohar called up the firm and said that he had pawned around 100 gm of gold with a firm in Thilaknagar and wanted to recover the gold so that he could deposit it with Hindustan Gold.

Manohar had even sent a copy of his driving licence as ID proof on WhatsApp and requested the manager to send an executive with the money to the firm so that he could hand over the gold to him, adding that he was in a hurry. As promised, Abhilash sent one of his executives Hemanth with the cash to Manappuram Gold in Thilaknagar where Manohar was waiting. After Hemanth reached the destination, Manohar convinced Hemanth to wait downstairs saying he would go alone to the firm and get the gold and hand it over to him.

Fled with money

Trusting Manohar, Hemanth handed over the cash and soon realised that Manohar, who walked into the third floor of the building where the Manappuram gold firm was situated. But instead of getting into the office, Manohar used a window of the third floor from where he jumped to an adjacent building and escaped with the money. Hemanth, after waiting for half an hour, found something amiss and went in search of Manohar, but there was no trace of him. He then called up Abhilash and narrated the incident, who in turn lodged a complaint with the police. The suspect could have used a false name with a false identity proof and phone number, the police suspect. The police are verifying CCTV footage to get clues.
