In a swift action, the city police arrested a 33-year-old cook for killing his friend’s sister, within three hours of the crime.

The suspect Ramesh N, a resident of Doddaballapur, had taken a Rs 1.5-lakh loan. When the moneylenders demanded the money back, he planned to kill the victim and rob her to repay his debts.

The suspect is a friend of victim Chandrakala’s brother Jaggi alias Jagadish and would visit her house often.

Ramesh had noticed that Chandrakala, a homemaker, stayed alone when her husband went to work, the police said.

On the evening of April 19, Ramesh went to Chandrakala’s house on the pretext of a casual visit and smothered her to death. He then robbed her earrings and a gold chain weighing 75 grams, the police added.

He locked the house from outside. Within two hours, he went to a gold loan firm in Devanahalli and pledged the gold for Rs 1.2 lakh, the police said.

He returned home with the cash and waited for the moneylenders to repay them.

The Chikkajala police, who began the probe after getting to know about the murder around 6 pm, stumbled upon a person who had seen Ramesh visiting the victim’s house hours before the crime.

Based on his information, the police rushed to his house, arrested him and recovered the money.

During the interrogation, Ramesh confessed to his crime.

He was then taken to the gold loan firm from where Chandrakala’s valuables were recovered.

Further investigations are underway.
