A 47-year-old police constable died after being run over by a BMTC bus just 100 metres from his home in West Bengaluru around 1.45 pm on Thursday.

Ramachari B dropped off his daughter at college and was riding home to Gollarahatti when the accident occurred on Magadi Road near Byadarahalli, police said.

Ramachari, posted at the KR Market police station, had worked the night shift on Wednesday but was relieved on Thursday in the wake of a demonstration by anganwadi workers at Freedom Park.

He came home, dropped off his daughter at college and started to ride back.

He initially took a service road but soon came onto the main road. A muddy patch in the middle of the road forced him to ride on the right side. Minutes later, a BMTC bus brushed past his two-wheeler. This was enough to make him lose control of the motorbike.

While the two-wheeler screeched to the left side of the road, Ramachari fell on the other side and came under the rear wheel of the bus. He was crushed to death beyond recognition.

Byadarahalli police had to make a lot of inquiries with local residents to establish the identity of the deceased. It was eventually the motorbike and the clothes that helped identify the constable.

Police have detained the BMTC bus driver and are carrying out further
investigations.
