Bengaluru cops get better of rowdies in fiery shootout

History-sheeters Naveen Kumar and Girish had gone into hiding after learning that police were searching for them for killing Chethan on October 14.

Two rowdies sustained gunshot injuries when police fired at them as they evaded arrest in the mistaken murder of a 23-year-old accountant. The hot chase ended in a fiery shootout at Katamnallur Gate near KR Puram in eastern Bengaluru.

History-sheeters Naveen Kumar and Girish had gone into hiding after learning that police were searching for them for killing Chethan on October 14.

The assailants had mistaken Chethan for the henchman of a rival rowdy when he came asking about an address. They killed him and burnt his body on the outskirts of the city.

A police team began chasing Kumar and Girish early on Sunday morning after learning that they were riding a motorcycle towards Kadugodi.

The police vehicle soon overtook them and blocked their way. But the duo quickly got off the bike and hid in the bush. Kumar then fired three bullets at the police vehicle, damaging it.

KR Puram police inspector Jayaraj jumped out of the vehicle and fired at Kumar in the leg. Girish attacked constable Muniraju with a dagger in a bid to escape.

But Jayaraj also shot him in the leg. After both the suspects collapsed, police took them to the KR Puram government hospital for treatment. The injured constable is being treated at the Satya Sai hospital and doctors said he was out of danger.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Whitefield) Abdul Ahad said Kumar had a long criminal history.

Police believe he’s involved in at least nine crimes, including two murders. He is one of the accused in the brutal murder of Ciripura N Srinivas, the husband of former BBMP corporator R Manjula Devi, March 2014.

The KR Puram police had booked him under the Karnataka Control of Organized Crime Act, besides opening a history sheet against him. Girish is involved in half-a-dozen cases, Ahad added.
