Couple live it up after duping boss; husband arrested

A 25-year-old domestic and her husband duped her employers and stole gold, diamond and silver articles worth Rs 1.35 crore over a period of a year, to live a lavish life.

The police arrested the maid Reshma’s husband Kiran Kumar (28), who used the loot to live lavishly, and recovered around 3.5 kg of gold, a car and a bike from them. The police also sealed a house they had taken for lease for Rs 30 lakh. The police have not arrested Reshma as she had recently delivered a baby boy.

According to the police, Reshma was working as a domestic help at the house of Jayant S Beda, the owner of a plastic factory in the city. Reshma is married to Kiran Kumar, an autorickshaw driver and the couple have a daughter.

The couple, however, wanted to lead a lavish life. They hatched a plan to steal gold jewellery from Beda’s house. Reshma not only knew the nook and corners of the house but was also aware of inside stories of the family. She also won the trust of the Beda’s wife and started stealing gold and diamond in small quantities.

The police said Beda had two sons who used to accompany him to his factory, and his wife was alone at home most of the time. As the marriage of one the son was getting delayed, Reshma took advantage of the situation and advised Beda’s wife to perform religious rituals to overcome the problems. She even roped in her husband, who in the garb of an astrologer/priest, visited the house and reassured Beda’s wife. Over a period of one and a half years, the couple managed to steal around 4 kg of gold and 2.5 kg of silver from their house.

The couple sold the old gold and bought new gold jewellery some of which they pawned and took a plush house in Koramangala for lease by paying Rs 30 lakh. Kiran dumped his autorickshaw, bought a brand new Maruti Swift D’zire and an Enfield Bullet motorbike. The couple started leading a lavish lifestyle.

Their luck ran out when Beda and his family checked the lockers while getting dressed for a function and found the gold and diamond ornaments missing. They lodged a complaint with the Koramangala police station.

The police kept a close watch on her after whcih they took her husband into custody on Saturday for questioning. They confessed to the crime after detailed questioning.
