Last Updated 31 July 2018, 19:53 IST

In yet another daring escape from the state-run Observation Home for boys in Madiwala, 13 juveniles managed to escape in the wee hours of Tuesday after assaulting the guard and snatching the keys. This is the second such incident within two weeks after nine boys escaped on July 23 and the third this year. On May 26, six juveniles escaped breaking through a toilet window.

Tuesday’s escape is the eighth incident since 2016.

Sources from the Observation Home revealed that the juveniles had planned the escape and were playing carroms till midnight on Monday. They picked a mock fight among themselves, just to ensure the guard entered their dormitory.

As Home Guard Ramesh Babu heard the fight and opened the lock and entered, a group of juveniles attacked him and tied him up with a rope. Hearing his screams, another guard Suresh K R also came in. He was also attacked and tied up. They later snatched the keys of the main gate and escaped. The entire incident happened between 12.30 am and 1.30 am on Tuesday. Despite such serious breaches, repeated break-outs and an assault on the guards, the superintendent of the Observation Home, Kamala, neither informed the police nor filed a complaint.

DH had published detailed articles on the bad condition of the Observation Home in its July editions and even informed Minister for Women and Child Development Jayamala but the situation. With no rehabilitation process in place and staff shortage, juveniles pass on tips about easy escape routes to freshers. The minister too was unavailable for comment despite repeated calls and messages.

On July 23, around 8.30 am, nine juveniles escaped from the Observation Home on the pretext of taking a shower. They broke open the window grills and escaped. Of the nine, three were traced by Girinagar police when they were moving suspiciously. One of them was trying to contact his friend on the mobile to get some money. One boy was detained from his parents’ house in Bengaluru Rural area.

Sources added that a juvenile who was convicted for murder is the mastermind behind the escape and had escaped thrice before.
