Parameshwara acts on DH Citizens’ Charter on garbage

Last Updated 03 November 2018, 11:41 IST

Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara on Friday ordered the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to crack down on people dumping garbage indiscriminately across Bengaluru.

Holding a review meeting of the BBMP’s solid waste management (SWM) wing in Malleswaram, the deputy chief minister not only came down heavily on officials for their cavalier attitude but also said that he will order a CID inquiry into the garbage disposal scam worth several crores.

Returning from week-long intense electoral politics, Parameshwara caught BBMP officials by surprise by holding a review meeting on solid waste management. The high court too had rapped the corporation over poor management of garbage across Bengaluru considering that the city had innumerable black spots denting its image at the global level.

The move by the deputy chief minister comes after an interactive event organised by DH & Citizen for Civic Amenities Forum on the garbage disposal mechanism on October 6.

Parameshwara had promised to try his best to resolve the crisis. After DH presented him with the Citizens’ Charter on Tuesday, he tweeted, “I am pleased to have received the Citizens’ Charter, where the key takeaways from our discussions have been collated. We will review your (Citizens’) suggestions and work together to make our city a better place.”

Progressing further, Parameshwara on Friday cleared five suggestions given by the citizens’ group. “We have taken the garbage problem seriously and those resorting to indiscriminate dumping will be fined Rs 500 instead of Rs 100. This will be followed strictly across Bengaluru,” he told reporters after the meeting.

On the shortage of manpower and the absence of suitable waste-processing units, Parameshwa said, “We will appoint assistant engineers in every ward to manage the garbage disposal system. At the Assembly constituency level, senior health officials, besides the existing team of health officials and other technical staff, have been entrusted with the responsibility.”
