JOIN USDeputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara on Thursday directed the police to increase deployment of personnel and ensure wide publicity to women safety laws, programmes and the 1091 helpline.
Parameshwara, who also holds the Home department portfolio, rued that citizens, especially women, lacked awareness on various safety measures and programmes that are in place for them. He met app-based taxi aggregators and police officials, his second such meeting in under a month, to discuss ways of improving women’s safety.
Parameshwara directed the police to deploy more personnel to ensure women who travel by cabs at night are safe. “There are enough funds under the Nirbhaya project to install 5,000 CCTV cameras, purchase 1,000 two-wheelers and other vehicles,” Parameshwara said.
In his first meeting with the aggregators and police on June 30, Parameshwara pressed for intensifying background checks of drivers.
Help from Bavaria
Parameshwara also discussed improving the safety of women with a delegation from Bavaria, a federal state in Germany. He urged the delegation to come up with a plan to help increase the number of police stations and the number of women in the police force to 20%. The Bavarian State Police has offered to train the Belagavi police in November this year, on the lines of the training that was held for the Mysuru police earlier.
