Firecrackers: SC, GoK orders have little, no effect

Last Updated 07 November 2018, 06:01 IST

The Supreme Court and state government orders on restrictions in timing for bursting firecrackers, have had little or no effect this Diwali in Bengaluru.

On Tuesday, people were seen bursting crackers before and after the stipulated time - 8 - 10 pm. Even in Wednesday morning crackers were being burst.

The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), police department and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) could do little or nothing citing religious and sentimental issues.

"The officials said that it was not possible to regulate everywhere. There should have been self-regulation since SC orders have been issued. We physically cannot go to every lane and stop people," said a KSPCB official.

The police officials said that they have many other things to handle and unless a complaint is made no action can be taken.

In the meantime, BBMP officials were also unable to handle.

The BBMP control room received only two complaints from Tuesday of crackers being burst. The officials said that people were not aware and so were not filing any reports.

In the October 23 order, the Supreme Court has given strict guidelines, including the time period between 8 pm to 10 pm, for using firecrackers as part of Diwali, New Year and other festivals. It directed to all states to implement the guideline in order to check the air pollution.
