It’s not just the children who should have all the fun, feels Kala Sunder, looking forward to joining a summer camp.

Kala, 64, a former teacher and Russian translator, is one of the many people eagerly awaiting the summer camp, organised exclusively for senior citizens in the city.

The summer camp is being hosted by a city-based organisation to enable senior citizens relive their youth and have a whole new experience.

The camp will have sessions on zumba, theatre, dance, art and craft among others.

Summer camps for the elderly are popular in the US and Europe but yet to take off in India.

“As part of the camp, we will organise fitness training designed for elders and social activities aimed at reliving the good old days. Art, craft and theatre will enrich them,” says Sreeja Rani, coordinator of the summer camp organised by the Nightingales Medical Trust in RT Nagar.

The camp is for senior citizens aged above 55 years.

“We are doing this for the first time. We will continue with it based on the reception. All the activities will be under the supervision of specialists, keeping in mind the elders’ needs. Physical activities will be overseen by a geriatric physiotherapist. Art, theatre and dance will be supervised by experts in the fields too,” Sreeja adds.

“This is not just for recreation. The focus is on physical activities specially designed for the elderly to keep them flexible and active. The games are designed to improve cognition as well,” explains Kala.

The camp is likely to be held in June.
