A senior police official said the four men had been arrested in 2016 by the JB Nagar police in a murder case and were lodged in the Parappana Agrahara central prison for a year.

The men, out on bail a few months ago, targeted lone walkers and robbed them at knifepoint. The four had faster mobility since Vishal, an auto driver, had a vehicle handy.

On April 20, Vishal and Sundar stopped one Omkar Reddy at the New Horizon College near Marathahalli and stole his mobile phone and cash at knifepoint. He later filed a police complaint at the Marathahalli police station.

When the accused waited near the college on April 24, the police went in mufti and rounded them up. After intense interrogation, the accused confessed to their crime.

They admitted to having robbed a person of Rs 12,000 near the Munnekolala railway gate and another person near Nagarjuna Apartment in Kadubeesanahalli of Rs 10,000.
