HC grants week's time to ad firms to pay tax dues

The High Court of Karnataka on Wednesday granted a week’s time for the advertisement agencies to pay advertisement tax to BBMP and clear the dues.

Justice Vineet Kothari, who is monitoring the payment of advertisement tax, has directed BBMP to go ahead and use all methods to recover advertisement tax from defaulters, if they failed to pay the dues.

Advocate R Subramanya, appearing for BBMP, submitted the fifth status report stating that Palike has collected Rs 42.5 crore as advertisement tax till date from 1,925 advertising hoardings. He said advertisement tax from 2,968 advertising hoardings is yet to be collected. The report said that of the 2,439 unauthorised hoardings, BBMP has removed 1,170 hoardings and 1,269 hoardings are yet to be removed. Palike also submitted that 309 hoardings with their structures have been removed so far.

Justice Kothari had passed a detailed order directing the advertisement agencies to pay 100% of the tax demanded and 50% of the penalty and interest on the tax due. The judge adjourned the hearing to August 30.
