HDK to go on padayatra from Hubballi to Belagavi

JD(S) State president H D Kumaraswamy will lead a four-day padayatra from Hubballi to Belagavi starting June 25  to draw the attention of the Central and the State governments to the plight of farmers in Karnataka.

Addressing a meet in Bengaluru on Wednesday, Kumaraswamy said that JD(S) leaders, office-bearers and functionaries will participate in the 105-km padayatra, which will culminate in front of the Suvarna Soudha on June 29, the opening day of the legislature session in Belagavi.

Kumaraswamy accused the state government of lackadaisical attitude towards the plight and problems of farmers. Sugar cane factory owners owned dues to the tune of Rs 4,600 crore to the farmers and the government was making no attempt the recover it. Factory owners had paid only Rs 1,600 to Rs 1,800 per tonne of sugar cane to farmers in the current season instead of Rs 2,500 per tonne fixed by the government.

It had been three months since grape and pomegranate farmers pleaded with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to come to their rescue following crop loss due to blight disease, but to no avail, he added.
