Helmet-less riding claims two lives

A helmet-less pillion rider was killed after he fell to the ground when his bike brushed against a car in Madiwala on Sunday evening.

The victim, Akhil Augustine (20), was a resident of Electronics City.

He was heading home after the Sunday mass service at the St Thomas Church in Madiwala when the accident happened, the police said.

According to the police, the accident happened around 7.45 pm near the Madiwala police station when a car was taking a right turn towards the market. Augustine was riding pillion without a helmet, while his relative, Benixon Thomas, was riding the bike, the police said.

Their bike brushed against the car and Augustine fell to the ground, banging his head on the road. The rider escaped unhurt, the police added.

Augustine was shifted to the St John's Hospital, where the doctors treated him for blood clots in the brain. But he stopped responding to the treatment around 1.30 am and died. Following the post-mortem, his body was handed over to his family, the police said.

The Madiwala police have registered a case of accidental death due to rash and negligent driving, and have booked the driver of the car. They have also seized the car and the bike. Further investigations are under way.

Augustine had just completed his BCA (Bachelor of Computer Application) programme from the Kristu Jayanti College and was looking for a job.

26-year-old woman dies

In another incident, a 26-year-old woman was killed after she lost control of her scooter and hit a stationary car from behind at High Grounds in the early hours of Sunday.

Ayesha was a resident of Palace Guttahalli, and was employed at a private bank. She was returning home after meeting her fiancée, the police said.

According to the police, the accident happened near the Kodava Samaj close to the State Bank of India in Shivajinagar around 2.20 am. She hit the car from the rear after she lost control over her vehicle. She sustained grievous injuries as she was not wearing a helmet, and was rushed to the Mahaveer Jain Hospital. She succumbed to her injuries around 4 am.

The police have registered a case and are investigating.
