Impostor advocate cheats 3 kidnap-accused men with bail

Last Updated 24 February 2019, 19:11 IST

Posing as an advocate, a man cheated three accused men in a kidnap case and made away with Rs 1.6 lakh by promising to obtain bail.

The three were accused parties in the kidnap of a minor girl, registered at the HAL police station in December last year.

The family of the minor girl was the complainant in the case. As it was a case of elopement, the police had not arrested the accused.

Soon after the FIR was registered, the trio approached Chethan Kumar, who promised to obtain bail for the accused.

At the City Civil and Sessions Court, Kumar received a fee of Rs 1.6 lakh for obtaining bail and also demanded more money to get certified copies of the bail.

The three accused paid the amount and obtained the copies. However, as they were not convinced, they decided to verify the copies with another advocate, as well as check with the court if the bails were indeed genuine.

Advocate Veeraswamy confirmed to the trio that the bail copies were forged. Later, Veeraswamy himself filed a complaint against Chethan Kumar on behalf of the accused.

The Halasuru Gate police have taken up a case of cheating, forgery and impersonation.
