Indira Canteens to serve 'hot' beverages

Last Updated 16 November 2018, 11:17 IST

Buoyed by the success of Indira Canteens that sold subsidised tiffin and meals to the citizens, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahangara Palike (BBMP) in assistance with the state government has gone a step ahead and decided to serve beverages like coffee and tea for the public.

Acknowledging the decision Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development minister G Parameshwara on Friday told reporters that very soon the services will be launched in all Indira canteens.

"People had suggested selling of coffee, tea at Indira canteens during their feedback and subsequently several representations were also received. The people suggested that selling coffee and tea does not result in any burden on the canteens as they already have required infrastructure. Hence we have been mulling over the idea and very soon the services will be rolled out in all canteens," Parameshwara told reporters in Bengaluru.

However, when asked whether the beverages would also be sold at subsidised prices, the DCM said, "Even though we have decided to roll out the services, we are yet to decide on the price."

Recently the BBMP had also paved way for a new tradition by choosing to order food from the Indira Canteens for its monthly Council meeting rather than splurging money on private caterers.

Senior officials at the BBMP revealed to DH that decision to sell tea, coffee at Indira canteens is expected rake up enough moolah for both the BBMP and Indira Canteens. But the civic body is yet to decide whether the 'hot' beverages be sold all through the day or only at some time of the day.
