Lokayukta to probe baby theft case

Justice Hegde said his team will investigate the case after the police completed its probe. The Lokayukta received a formal complaint in this regard on Wednesday.

A team of doctors, which does voluntary work for Lokayukta, had raided two government hospitals to check malpractices in purchase of drugs. “The team found that the hospitals had fluid bottles and disposable syringes, far more than what was required. They were stored in unhygienic places like toilets and unused kitchens and almost all were well past the expiry date," he said.

He was speaking at the inauguration of an acute stroke unit at Columbia Asia Hospitals on Thursday.

"Under the Constitution, it is the State's obligation to take care of healthcare. Unfortunately the manner in which the present administration is running, we don't find many facilities in government hospitals," he said.

Dr Nandakumar Jairam, Chairman and Group Medical Director, Columbia Asia Hospitals, said that the unit was well-equipped and had devices like Penumbra system that used along with other devices and drugs helped in better treatment and management of stroke patients.
