The Central Crime Branch (CCB) police arrested a 24-year-old man who duped people online by claiming to be an Income Tax (I-T) officer.

The suspect, John Kajiche, is a native of Dhimapura in Nagaland and was residing at Ejipura.

Police said he used to call people claiming to be an I-T officer and send links to their email IDs and asked them to fill in their account details. Once the victim clicks the link, John would get access to their OTPs (One-Time Password).

Using these details, John would transfer money into his account.

The police further added that John came to the city a few months ago and was staying in a rented house along with his associate in Ejipura. The duo started calling people by posing as I-T officials and informed them about an update on their income tax filing. They would convince victims to click on the link and took all their money.

A complaint has been filed in this regard. On December 15, the suspect contacted the complainant and asked him to click the link and upload details. Within minutes, he lost Rs 2.2 lakh.

During the investigation, police traced the duo and arrested John, while his associate is absconding.
