The police arrested a man for assaulting a traffic constable attached to the Vijayanagar traffic police station near Modi Road bridge in Basveshwararnagar on Tuesday evening.

The accused has been identified as Ranganath (26), a resident of Gayathrinagar.

He was arrested immediately after he assaulted constable K B Shashi Kumar.

According to the police, Shashi Kumar and a home guard Mahesh were managing traffic near the Chord Road around 7.30 pm when a minor accident involving a BMTC bus and an autorickshaw caused a traffic jam. Shashi Kumar rushed to the spot to clear the traffic when Ranganath, who was riding a two-wheeler, and other motorists started complaining that the police were not clearing the traffic jam.

When the policeman shouted at them saying he was doing his job, Ranganath and others started abusing Shashi Kumar.

Heated arguments ensued after which Ranganath assaulted Kumar and Mahesh and a few others too joined in. Shashi Kumar informed about the attack on the wireless and caught hold of Ranganath while the others fled.

Basaveshwaranagar police rushed to the spot and took Ranganath to the police station.

The police registered a case, arrested him and produced him before a magistrate who remanded him in judicial custody.
