Master’s, PhD in rock mechanics

Known for its precision and expertise in controlled blasts, various geological and geophysical tests, the National Institute of Rock Mechanics (NIRM) is set to offer master's and PhD programmes even as it seeks to expand its operation by taking part in international biddings.

K Rajeshwara Rao, Additional Secretary in the Union Ministry of Mining, who chaired NIRM's conference with industry Partners on Future Strategies, said 90% of the industrial client who availed service of the institute come back to it for their next project.

"At present, the institute dominates various needs in several fields, including mining, power, nuclear, oil and energy security. However, the NIRM has the capacity to take the next step and become your partners in international projects," Rao told the industry leaders.

H S Venkatesh, Director of NIRM, said the institute was charting plans for business expansion as well as academic areas.

"Besides offering masters and doctoral programmes, we plan to start a skill development centre at Kolar Gold Fields, which has a history of mining expertise. At the same time, we are looking for industrial partners with whom we can enter into joint venture and take up international projects," he said.

Dorji P Phuntshok from Bhutan, who heads a private company, said NIRM's studies and reports have been of great help to the companies located in the fragile Himalayas. "Indian companies lack representation at the global level as they chose to cut cost by not sending representatives to international conferences, losing huge value to save a small amount of money,” he said.

Representatives from leading energy and infrastructure companies shared their experiences with NIRM as well as their expectations from the institution.
