Mayor R Sampath Raj on Sunday embarked on a drive to clean the garbage piled up in markets across the city after Friday’s Varamahalakshmi festival.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) held massive clean ups in KR Market and other major souks at Shivaji Nagar, KR Puram, Kengere, Yelahanka, Madiwala, Sarakki and Singasandra. They pressed 11 compactors, 18 auto tippers and 150 Pourakarmikas into service, besides NGOs and BBMP officials.

Raj visited KR Market to take part in the massive cleaning drive, directing the officials to clear the garbage by afternoon. Before the Mayor’s visit, BBMP officials tried to forcibly evict the footpath vendors which caused a minor clash between them and the vendors.

After the inspection, the Mayor said: “There’s a lot of garbage after a festival. I’ve directed the officials to clean up the markets without delay after each festival.”

The Mayor also added that 110 tonnes of garbage was transported from the markets, of which 40 tonnes were dispatched to the MSGP unit and the 70 tonne mixed waste to the Bellahalli unit.
