Metro suspect cleared, another surfaces

Last Updated 09 May 2019, 02:05 IST

The man, whose CCTV footage showing him enter the Majestic Metro station went viral and was played up by a section of the media, is a regular commuter and there is nothing suspicious about him, according to the police.

However, the police are on the lookout for another suspicious man who had entered the station from the East Gate and had spoken to a woman seeking help to “carry out a job” for any amount. The police said three teams are trying to trace him, and the two were separate CCTV footage.

The footage of the regular commuter shows him entering the door frame metal detector, which starts beeping. The guard then insists that he remove his shirt.

On Wednesday afternoon, 49-year-old Riyaz Ahmed walked into the Upparpet police station and told the police that he was a watch repairman with a pushcart in the subway at Majestic. He told the police that he was shocked to see his footage being played up by television channels portraying him as a “terror suspect”. He was soon flooded with phone calls from his relatives inquiring about his well-being. He also filed a complaint with the police against television news channels for damaging his image.

Ahmed is a resident of Gangondanahalli in Nayandahalli and a regular Metro commuter travelling between Nayandahalli and Majestic. On Monday night too, Ahmed, closing for the day, came to the Majestic Metro station. When the security guard asked him to pull his kurta up after the metal detector beeped, Ahmed said he felt uncomfortable lifting his kurta in front of the public. He thus left the station to go by bus. The Upparpet police have taken up his complaint.
