Nurse held for sexually assaulting foreign patient in Mysuru

Suspect dismissed after probe panel confirms crime on 20-yr-old

A male nurse attached to a reputed hospital chain in the city has been arrested on the charge of sexually harassing a foreign patient under the guise of examination, recently. 

The hospital dismissed the said employee, preceding police action, soon after the victim lodged a complaint with the management. N R Police, on Wednesday, arrested Sumith, aged 24 years, from Mellahalli in Maddur taluk, Mandya district. The 20-year-old victim from the USA was suffering from stomachache, when she was admitted to Columbia Asia Hospital on November 6.

The suspect, who was assisting a lady doctor, sexually assaulted the victim after the doctor went home. To be precise, the male nurse inappropriately examined her. The victim has told police that when she warned him against his misbehaviour, he got infuriated and tried to outrage her modesty. Scared, she ran out of the ward where she was being treated and lodged a complaint with the hospital management. She also brought the matter to the notice of the American Consul General.


Hospital’s version
Following the arrest, a note issued from the Columbia Asia authorities states that the hospital strongly condemns the act committed by the male nurse and will offer full cooperation to the authorities to ensure that justice is delivered to the complainant. The authorities said that, on receiving the complaint, the hospital immediately acted as per protocol and law. The hospital conducted a thorough inquiry by the sexual harassment committee, as required by law. All facts and events were corroborated and verified by this committee. The committee found that under the guise of medical examination, the nurse had sexually assaulted the complainant.

The findings were shared with the complainant. The nurse, when confronted with the evidence, owned up to the misdeed. The hospital management apologised to the complainant and has already dismissed the employee based on the inquiry by the sexual harassment committee, intimated the Karnataka State Nursing Council and the complainant that she could lodge a criminal complaint and the hospital will provide all possible assistance.
