Officer blocked from chasing truck laden with cows

Chasing a truck trafficking cows, an Animal Welfare Board officer found her vehicle jammed between two cars that blocked her way.

The officer, Josine Antony, also a member of the Gau Gyan Foundation, lodged a complaint with the Nelamangala police about the incident.

At 4 am on Thursday, Josine noticed a truck laden with cows heading to the city from the Tumakuru side. She turned her car around and followed the truck to see where the consignment of cows was headed.

Josine then noticed two cars trailing her. One of them shot past her vehicle and blocked the way, forcing her to slow down and lose track of the truck ahead. The Tata Zest then moved aside, as the other car took a U-turn with the container truck and headed back in the direction of Tumakuru.

Josine lodged a complaint of wrongful restraint with the Nelamangala town police, explaining to them that the cows were being transported for slaughter. The police have registered the case and efforts are on to trace the truck and the two cars.

"Trafficking of cows for slaughter has increased, especially from Tumakuru, where around 30 trucks leave on a regular basis — half of them head for Kerala and the other half towards the city," Josine told DH.
