Parents plan to approach rights panel

A group of parents is contemplating to approach the National Human Rights Commission and the court over the confusion with regards to Right to Education (RTE) quota seats.

Confusion over textbooks and uniforms, discrimination of students and collection of additional fees are the issues bothering students who have sought admission under the (RTE) quota.

The parents from over 40 private schools raised concerns with regards to admission.

Narasimha Rao from the Child Rights Trust said the parents were being asked to pay for textbooks and uniforms even as the act mandates that schools provide them.

“The department had recently issued a circular stating that for students studying state syllabus, books ought to be given by schools. There is lack of clarity on what happens to those in the ICSE and CBSE Schools,” Rao said.

He added that most parents have approached the block education officers, but to no effect.

“There is very less intervention from the department. Even as the Karnataka Child Rights Commission has been sending notices to schools, problems continue to exist as it is only a recommendatory body,” he added.

The parents also complain that their children are subjected to discrimination in the school. They said there was a different treatment for children who seek admission under the quota, which has left them thinking whether they should send their wards to school at all.
