Police book marriage halls to detain drunk drivers

Last Updated 31 December 2018, 17:47 IST

The traffic police have booked eight marriage/convention halls across the city to detain drunk driving offenders until they get over their drunken stupor.

The police will seize the offender’s vehicle and send them to the nearest marriage hall, where they will be detained until 6 am the next morning. The offenders will be allowed to contact family members to inform about the detention.

The vehicles of offenders will be seized and they will also have to pay fines, P Harishekaran, Additional Commissioner of Police, Traffic, said.

Around 2,000 traffic policemen have been deployed at strategic locations. Special drives and patrolling on highways, NICE road, flyovers and arterial roads will be taken up to keep a check on drunk driving, the officer said.

“It’s not a penal action, but a parental touch to ensure the safety of motorists and their family members," Harishekaran added.
