The KR Puram police shot and captured a murder accused who attacked them to escape arrest at Kumbena Agrahara in the early hours of Friday.

Charan Raj (34) was arrested for killing rowdy-sheeter Manjunath alias Water Manja, a resident of Priyankanagar, on Thursday over a land dispute. Raj and three of his associates hacked Manjunath to death on Thursday afternoon.

Raj sustained bullet wounds to his leg and was taken to hospital, while the police also arrested his associates, Murali and Raghu, who were accomplices in the murder.

Based on a tip-off, the special team formed to arrest Manjunath's killers spotted Raj escaping on a scooter. He abandoned the vehicle and tried to hide in the forest. Raj attacked the police with a machete when they tried arresting him, injuring sub-inspector Narayanaswamy. Inspector Jayaraj shot him on the left leg. The police arrested Raj as he collapsed to the ground.

According to the police, Manjunath had bought a piece of land from Raj and paid him half the money. He made a makeshift home on the new ground and moved in with his family. When Raj asked him for the money he owed, Manjunath threatened him and asked him not to pester him. Following this, Raj and three of his men hacked Manjunath to death on Thursday afternoon.
