Bengaluru, dhns: The Northeast division police shot a murder suspect to thwart his attempt to escape their custody with his associate on Tuesday night in Chikkajala.

The murder suspect, Manoj alias ‘Kencha’ (22), used a dagger to attack police constable Mahadevmurthy and head constable Uday Kumar, both members of the special police team to capture the gang involved in the killing of block youth Congress president Arun Kumar of Yelahanka old town.

The police team, led by Yelahanka police inspector Manjegowda and Vidyaranyapura police inspector Ramamurthy, rushed to Chikkajala in the early hours of September 26, after receiving information that Manoj and his associate Manjegowda are hiding there.

Inspector Manjegowda ordered Manoj to drop the weapon and surrender, but Manoj went on assaulting the policemen.

Both the inspectors fired in self-defence, injuring Manoj’s arm and a leg. The suspect was later taken along with the injured cops to the hospital where he is said to be recovering.

While Manoj is the prime accused in Arun Kumar’s murder, police are also on the lookout for three others.

On September 24 night, Arun Kumar and his friend were returning home after watching a movie. Manoj, Manjegowda and three others hacked Kumar to death in Allalasandra gate.

“On interrogating Manjegowda, we’ve come to learn that the murder was a result of financial dispute and old rivalry, though we can confirm this only after arresting the three others,” said Kala Krishnaswamy, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast Division).
