Property tax: BBMP nets Rs 750 crore

According to the Palike, the majority of the property taxes collected to far has come from commercial establishments in the City. Ironically, the number of residential properties is more than that of commercial properties in the city.

“We have a ratio of 60:40 in collecting property tax from commercial property vis-a-vis residential property. Surprisingly, the properties are in the ratio of 35:65 in favour of residential properties in the city,” said BBMP Deputy Commissioner, U A Vasant Rao.

The Palike said as many as 4,000 applications received on the last two days before the end of property tax collection for 2008-09 (without penalty), were wrongly filed. “We are now getting the data on their previous payments and are updating it,” said Rao.

Rs 5 crore a day!

On the property tax collection this year, BBMP Commissioner Bharatlal Meena told Deccan Herald that the Palike’s tax collection drive is going on smoothly. On an average, the BBMP is collecting a sum of Rs five crore per day.

Referring to cases of bounced cheques, Meena said there could be some stray cases, and that so far, no complete information has been gathered about it. He, however, said that the Palike had identified around 200 such cases, and cases have been filed against those persons whose cheques had bounced.

The Commissioner said that further action would be taken against such individuals.
