Following the Opposition’s allegation that funds meant for purchasing groceries in Indira canteens are being misused, the BBMP is planning to prepare purchase indent for the canteens once in 15 days.

The canteens’ contractors should submit the indent to the civic body every fortnight. Earlier, they were submitting the indents of groceries purchased and meals served every month.
BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad told DH: “We have received complaints many times about the false indent. Hence, we have directed the contractor to submit the indent once in 15 days.”

There was an allegation by the BBMP council members and public about the false report on the meals served to the people.

The Palike is also planning to audit the bills submitted by the contractors. “The civic body is also going to audit the bills submitted for purchasing the goods to the canteens. Four officers will be assigned to audit the bills,” a BBMP official said.

Recently, after the lab test revealed that the Indira Canteen food was not safe, the civic body had decided to collect the food samples from the canteen kitchens every month and send it for testing. It will also display the test report in all the canteens.

BJP corporator Umesh Shetty, who conducted the tests at the Ramaiah Advanced Testing Laboratory and the Public Health Institute, found the presence of chemicals and bacteria in the food served at five Indira canteens in Bengaluru.
