R Madhavan took over as Chairman and Managing Director of state-owned aviation major, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) on Saturday. He succeeded T Suvarna Raju. Prior to this, Madhavan was Executive Director, Accessories Division, at HAL Lucknow.

Madhavan said his key focus areas would be to maintain HAL's numero uno position in Indian aerospace industry while delivering world-class products and services through increased indigenisation. The emphasis, he added, would be to build on the core competence of the company and emerge as the preferred supplier in the aerospace industry.

A mechanical engineer from National Institute of Technology, Raipur, Madhavan had completed his M Tech from IIT Madras, before joining HAL as a management trainee in July 1982.

A HAL release said he had spearheaded absorption of technology for production of the Su-30 MKI airframe and engine accessories from raw material phase at HAL’s Accessories Division, Lucknow.
