India is a peace-loving country but that does not reflect on the ground. Rapes and murders are happening in the name of religion, Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara said on Sunday.
Speaking at the 26th Hussain Day, he underscored the need to follow Gandhi's principles and co-exist peacefully.
Hussain Day is an annual event organised by social philanthropist Aga Sultan, bringing leaders from all faiths to spread the message of Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was martyred in the Battle of Karbala, Iraq, in 680.
Local MLA, N A Haris, said people speak about humanity when they are at a gathering, but forget it the moment they leave the dais. "Hatred is spreading because good people keep quiet. I assure that both Karnataka and my constituency (Shanthinagar) are peace-loving and we will live peacefully. A lot of hatred and negativity are being spread because of social media. We have acquired knowledge as well as hatred," he added.
Actor Javed Jaffrey, Islamic scholar Hujattul Islam Moulana Syed Kalbe Rushaid Rizvi, Archbishop of Bangalore Peter Machado and Isro scientist Mahendra Pal Singh were present on the occasion.
