The 18-year-old was battling depression. And the last straw came on Friday when his mother scolded him. He decided to end his life and jumped in front of a Metro train at National College station.

The victim, who sustained head injuries, is out of danger and recuperating at NIMHANS hospital.

The teen is the eldest son of a couple residing in Basavanagudi. His father is a tailor who runs a shop at Netkallappa Circle, police said.

The youth was poor in studies. He had appeared for SSLC exams two years ago, but failed in four subjects. Though he tried to clear SSLC by taking supplementary exams, he eventually lost interest in studies.

Feeling dejected

The teenager has a school-going brother and sister. He was feeling dejected lately and kept to himself. He remained at home over the past few days and had even stopped helping his father with tailoring work.

On Friday morning, his mother scolded him for waking up late. While heading to his father’s shop later, he decided to end his life and jumped in front of a Namma Metro train, police said.

What followed was a series of dramatic events that affected the lives of many people in one way or the other.

The youth sustained head injuries and remained unconscious at the spot, stuck between the train and tracks at the National College Metro Station.

Police said it was sheer luck that he did not come under the wheels of the train.

Staffers rush

Upon informed, the police rushed to the spot along with a medical team, and an ambulance waiting.

The Metro staff and police had to push back the train in the absence of power supply. They rescued the victim,
who was then shifted to NIMHANS hospital. The doctors performed a CT scan of his head and ruled him out of danger. He will be discharged in a day or two, doctors told police.

Metro services were disrupted for about 30 minutes on the entire Green Line. While the incident came as a shock to those waiting on the platform, thousands of commuters were inconvenienced due to delays.
