As the cry against the steel flyover from Basaveshwara Circle to Hebbal flyover is on the rise, work at Sivananda Circle is going on at a slow pace.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), tasked with building the steel flyover by July 31, 2019, is unlikely to complete the work in time.

According to BBMP officials, pillars have come up and steel blocks have also been installed. Testing of the withstanding capacity of the steel blocks is also under progress. The officials say that 50% of the work is completed but more time will be needed for the ramps.

“Since the project began late and the length of the flyover has also increased, it will take some time for works to be completed. The hope is to complete the flyover by December end,” a senior BBMP official told DH.

As per Supreme Court directions, the length of the flyover has increased by 167 metres. The actual proposed length by the BBMP was 493 metres. The total length is now 660 metres.

Initially, the BBMP had estimated that the project would cost Rs 21.76 crore, but now it has increased by one and a half times because of the delay and increase in length. So far, Rs 10.74 crore has been spent on the project, the official added.

The apex court had increased the length of the flyover when locals had filed a petition against it. The court had directed the BBMP to execute the project but with the condition that the length of the flyover should be increased to ensure that people are not inconvenienced.

Local residents had approached the Karnataka High Court opposing the flyover in January 2018. The verdict went in the BBMP's favour. This was challenged in the Supreme Court and in March 2018, the apex court ordered the BBMP to execute the work.

“When first work order was issued in June 2017, the date of completion was 13 months. With the new orders, the date of completion has been revised. But it seems like there will be further delay,” the official added.
