According to sources in the Palike, a tax or penalty of Rs 50 per month will be levied on vehicle owners parking their four-wheelers outside their compounds. The attempt is said to be aimed at decongesting roads by checking unauthorised parking.

It is estimated that there are at least 5,000 cars in each ward of the Palike. A survey would be conducted to ascertain the parking location, registration number and owners of the vehicles in each ward. The agency which carries out the survey would be entrusted with the responsibility of collecting the tax also, sources said. However, there is no clarity on utilisation of money so collected.

“Parking outside the homes - on the roads or pavements - is a serious encroachment, and it has to be regulated. However, no decision has been taken yet on enforcing the proposed rule. This is a policy decision and has to be discussed in the Council,” Palike commissioner Siddaiah told Deccan Herald.

The Palike is also said to be  making efforts to streamline the award of contracts for garbage disposal. The BBMP is also contemplating imposing tax on optical fibre cables. Measures are also on the anvil to reclaim the lands under litigation. Sourcess said, possession had not been obtained in about 400 cases despite verdicts in favour of the Palike.
