The annual art fair, Chitra Santhe, organised by the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath is slated to take place in the City on January 3. Over 1,500 artists will put up their works on display.

Addressing a press conference in the City on Thursday, B L Shankar, president of Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, said the 13th edition of Chitra Santhe is expected to see a footfall of over three lakh people.

Even as the Parishath received close to 1,700 applications, not all were considered. About 300 works were also rejected because they did not meet the necessary standards.

“We formed a scrutiny committee to consider the works of the applicants. We had, earlier sent out invites to those who had participated in the previous years and also to noted artists,” said Shankar.

120 senior artists

Four senior artists will be felicitated on the occasion. While a majority of the paintings will be displayed on either sides of the Kumara Krupa Road and a part of Crescent Road, works of 120 senior artists will be exhibited in the four galleries inside the Parishath premises.

Shankar said there have been many requests to organise similar fairs in other districts of the State.

However, owing to limitations, it could not be done, he said.
In last year’s Santhe, transactions worth an estimated Rs three crore took place. This year, the Parishath vows to make it a more affordable one by having the ‘Manegondu Kalakruthi’ (an art work for each house) mission. “Costing anywhere between hundreds to lakhs, there will be a piece of art that everyone can afford to take home. This is our objective this time,” said Shankar.

Golden jubilee

With the institute having completed 50 years, several activities have been planned. Gallery 5 of the Parishat will be leased out for free to senior artists and alumni of Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath to display their work.

“We are inviting senior artists to display their works. We will bear the expenses of having the brochures and invites printed and also provide them with the necessary logistics,” said Shankar.
